As you may know, the sun can have a negative impact on your vision over a long period of time. Thankfully there is a lot that you can do to protect your vision from the sun and other sources of harm.

The team at our Chicago, IL eye care center would like to go over some simple eye care tips for the summer. The advice below will help you prevent vision loss while also having a great time outdoors in the warm weather.

Wear Sunglasses Whenever You’re Outdoors

The UV rays of the sun are a leading cause of cataracts and gradual vision loss with age. To protect your eyes from harm, consider wearing sunglasses with UV protection whenever you go outdoors. This can make a major difference over the years, especially if you’re out and about a lot throughout the year.

Wear a Hat with a Brim to Shield Your Eyes

In addition to wearing sunglasses, it’s always a good idea to have a hat with a brim handy. Shading your eyes from the sun helps guard your eyes even more than sunglasses alone. If baseball caps aren’t your style, there are plenty of other hats you can wear in the summer to complement your swimsuit or seasonal attire.

Stick to the Shade Whenever Possible

Just because the sun is out doesn’t mean you have to be exposed to it at all times. Sometimes it’s a good idea to get out of the sun after spending time in it. Stick to shady areas when you’ve gotten enough sun. This protects your eyes from damage and can also help you avoid sunburn.

Wear Goggles While Swimming

Whether it’s a pool or a natural body of water, there are plenty of contaminants present while you are swimming. Guard your eyes with goggles when you’re taking a dip. You’ll be able to see clearly when you’re underwater, and you’ll also prevent infection, illness, and potential eye injuries.

Wash Your Hands and Use Hand Sanitizer

On the note of eye infections, you should wash your hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer whenever you’re outdoors for long periods of time. Bacteria can wind up on your hands after hiking or swimming, and the last thing you want to do is to rub your eyes with unclean hands.

Bring Lubricating Eye Drops

A long day in the sun, lots of physical activity, wind exposure, and pollen can leave your eyes feeling dry. Rather than enduring itchy eyes, be sure to bring lubricating eye drops with you. They can relieve discomfort as it occurs. In addition, these eye drops may be helpful for flushing out unwanted substances that wind up in your eyes.

Drink Water and Stay Hydrated

Most importantly, let’s talk hydration. It’s a good idea to drink water throughout the day when you’re thirsty to help flush your system and avoid dehydration. Stick with water for the most part rather than sodas or sugary beverages. Bring a water bottle with you while you’re out, and keep an eye out for water fountains if you need a refill.
