Close up of the eye of a patient after she underwent an Optomap® retinal examAt Primary Eye Care Associates, we are proud to offer the very best in eye care, from our state-of-the-art laser vision correction technologies to the premium intraocular lenses (IOL) we use to restore vision after cataract surgery. Our commitment to offering care of the highest standard extends to our diagnostic services, which include the advanced Optomap® retinal exam. The Optomap® exam is unique among eye care technologies in that its diagnostic abilities go beyond diseases and disorders of the eye. It could be essential to diagnosing a number of potentially life-threatening conditions in their earliest stages, when they are most easily treated.

Dr. Steven Chandler and his team of highly trained eye care professionals are pleased to offer the full range of Optomap® retinal exam benefits to patients of our Chicago, IL practice. If you would like to experience these benefits for yourself, we invite you to schedule your initial appointment with Dr. Chandler by contacting Primary Eye Care Associates today.

What Is the Optomap® System?

The Optomap® system is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging system. While conventional methods of capturing an image of the retina are able to show only about 10 to 15 percent of the retina in a single image, the Optomap® is able to show approximately 80 percent of the retina in a single panoramic image. The retinal exam is fast and pain free. The system never comes into contact with the eye. The patient simply looks into the Optomap® device, a brief flash of light goes off, and the image has been taken. Each retinal capture takes less than a second, and the images are immediately ready for review.

What Are the Benefits of the Optomap® Retinal Exam?

The Optomap® retinal exam offers many unique benefits over traditional methods of capturing images of the retina. Here are just a few of the benefits Optomap® technology has to offer:

  • It allows Dr. Chandler to view a 200-degree angle, three-dimension image of your retina. The image is high-resolution and animated, so you and he can easily review it together. By contrast, traditional imaging systems allow doctors to view a 45-degree angle.
  • This ultra-widefield view allows Dr. Chandler to detect retinal diseases in their earliest possible stages, potentially preventing them from developing into far worse problems. This allows for proactive protection against impaired vision or blindness.
  • Optomap® imaging gives Dr. Chandler an unprecedented view of the blood vessels in the retina. The retina is the only part of the human body that allows blood vessels to be viewed without surgery. This unique view gives him the ability to check for signs of diseases such as stroke, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension.
  • Optomap® is safe for patients of all ages, including children. In fact, it is highly recommended that children undergo an Optomap® retinal exam so that any vision problems they might have can be detected and treated early in life.
