Restoring Your Vision with PRK Surgery
PRK surgery is a safe and effective laser vision correction procedure allowing many individuals who are not candidates for LASIK to nevertheless achieve excellent laser vision correction results. Like LASIK, PRK surgery can correct refractive errors of the eye that cause myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. At our Southside Chicago practice serving Bridgeview, Hinsdale, and surrounding areas, PRK surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon.

The Difference Between PRK and LASIK Vision Correction Procedures
While the PRK and LASIK vision correction procedures share important similarities, they are also separated by important differences. During LASIK surgery, a precision bladed device known as a microkeratome, or an IntraLase® laser, is used to create a flap in the outer layer of the cornea. The flap is then peeled back, allowing the LASIK procedure to be performed. Just as in the LASIK procedure, during PRK surgery a laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors. Unlike LASIK, however, PRK does not involve the creation of a corneal flap. Instead the outer layer of the cornea - known as the epithelial layer - is removed altogether in order to access the underlying layer. After PRK surgery, our staff serving Southside Chicago, Bridgeview, Hinsdale, and surrounding areas will provide protective contact lenses to assist in epithelial healing. While PRK surgery requires a longer recovery time than LASIK surgery, the procedure helps those who are not candidates for LASIK benefit from similarly excellent vision correction results.
The Benefits of PRK Surgery
Those who are subject to certain corneal conditions or scarring may not be candidates for LASIK vision correction as these circumstances can affect the creation of the corneal flap. Because PRK surgery does not involve the creation of a corneal flap, yet reshapes the cornea using the same state-of-the-art excimer laser, the procedure can produce outstanding vision correction results for those who are not candidates for LASIK. PRK surgery is an excellent opportunity for many of our patients from Southside Chicago, Bridgeview, Hinsdale, and other areas who have been seeking a safe and effective vision correction alternative to LASIK.
